Stevia is the name given to the family of over 240 herbs and plants which are part of the bigger and
more commonly known Sunflower family. They are only found in the sub tropical parts of North and South
One of the species in the family - known as sweetleaf or sugarleaf has also grown in popularity under
the name Stevia. As the name suggests the plant is cultivated specifically for its sweet leaves and
has gained massive attention as a low carbohydrate substitute for sugar. It has an almost non
existent effect on blood glucose which makes it ery attractive to those on a low carb diet.
Stevia has been used for decades in Japan as a natural sweetener whereas in the USA it only became
accepted in 2008. Even in the European Union it only became accepted in December 2011! Makes
you wonder why the rest of the world took so long to accept it when you think that the money spent on
healthcare per head of population in Japan is half that of the USA!!!
The leaves of the Stevia plant have 30-40 times the sweetness of ordinary sugar. In fact the plant has
been used for over 1000 years to sweeten drinks, medicines and just as a sweet treat!
Today, stevia is cultivated throughout Asia and the Americas and has become extremely popular with the
possibilities of it becoming used to enhance glucose tolerance and also as a sweetener used by diabetics and those
on a low carb diet.
